NO site will be listed here which ranks high in IQ -- which stands for "Irritation Quotient." Among my pet peeves are the following (all of which produce an automatic High Irritation Quotient rating): (1) Sites which promise much more than they deliver. (2) Sites which advertise that they are "free", but when you get there you discover that you need an AVS membership for entry. (3) Sites which make it impossible to exit easily (exit consoles and automatic exit redirects qualify at the top of my irritation quotient list). (4) Sites with more banners than content and/or where there are hidden or misleading links.
Another irritation, which qualifies for a separate
category all its own, is the presence of a large number of spelling and
grammatical errors in a site's text. I appreciate that the web is
an international medium in which, although English may the accepted linguistic
coin of the realm, many of the surfers and webmasters are not native speakers
of English. Those webmasters are certainly forgiven their errors.
However, it is also the case than many webmasters whose native language
IS English fill their sites with the most basic of errors. As a service
to those webmasters, and others, I have also included in this site my own
brief tutorial (click here)
which focuses on the most commonly produced errors of grammar and spelling.
